Project Monitoring 20th-26th

This week I have managed to finish my master template in In-design. This is good progress as I am ready to boost in the content for my project. However, problem occurred on the previous Friday as i had not be able to get hold of an SLR Digital camera. THIS WAS A PROBLEM. I am now having to re-schedule my photo-shoot date which requires much organising. This is because the band I am shooting for the DPS will need to get back to me on a date for the next gig. This is vitally important, whether or not they have a show will determine what I will move on to in the weeks to come. The schedule is thoroughly planned yet i haven't thought of any contingency planning as it the shoot has failed. I now have three options to choose from;

  1. Start a new article altogether which could cause a lot of back logged work.
  2. Arrange a different date wishfully thinking that a gig will be organised in the next week.
  3. If this fails I wont be able to get live show shots, instead i will ask a couple of band members into college for a photography shoot in the studio.
Whilst I am waiting on making a decision I will be making progress on the layout of the DPS and moving onto my article drafts. I have managed to finish my treatment which has helped me keep up to date with my initial project planning. One thing I have recently found out is to do with my third DPS, 'A Taste of Tyneside'. This article is based on the 'Chicken Parmo' a very popular take-away meal in the North-East, so popular it is becoming a part of the Northern culture. However on previous research I believed the dish came from Tyneside which isn't true it's in fact 'Teesside'! This means I need to make minor alterations to my project planning activities such us, article drafts, plans and flat plans.

I have been able to keep on top of my additional work this week as well as finishing off my treatment. This pieces include finalising all my article plans, photo shoot plans, call-sheets, flat plans and the drafts to my 'regular' articles. All of these will be uploaded further on tonight and tomorrow through the day as I have managed to free up some extra time for my product. One contingency to my project is worrying about how little time we actually have through the week. This week has flown by therefore it's making me think about the work i need to finish as quick as possible.

Research: This week i have managed to come across plenty of fonts that i will be using in the weeks to come, with this visual art from the fonts I am able to take my project that little bit further giving me an over all view of finishing up the product.

Production Schedule & Monitoring Document

Week
Date
Activity
1
13th Jan
Schedule Creation: My first week, prior to the start of my initial production, will include the creation of a heavy schedule that I am to follow throughout the weeks of production. By creating a schedule I will ensure completion of my project by the 15th of February and be able to prepare for any problems that may occur when creating my product. Problems related to photography; such as models not turning up or camera’s being faulty; network problems such as saving data or corrupt files; computers and programs not working, this could be to do with crashes or memory sticks; running out of time for my production as the deadline date falls closer.

The schedule will be specifically designed around my own attributes and faults therefore making myself utterly prepared for the worst that can happen. I will be setting myself four additional hours each week outside of college to keep on top of the production and any work I may be behind on. At the end of each week I will be blogging my progress in order to keep me on track and to reflect on any improvements that can be made in my production.

Schedule Creation: Other elements to my schedule will include me binding time to other A level commitments, which includes exams. This again helps me foretell any problems that can occur when finding time to satisfy a high standard of production. To do this I will need to gather information from my other subject teachers such as, homework and coursework deadlines and the amount of hours it will take to complete any future work I will receive in the next six weeks. This schedule will help me stay on top of other subjects as well as my product.

First Week Planning: For this coming week I shall take time to reflect on the parts to my article. This contains initial research such as the colours I will be using as well as creating a safe database of any fonts I will need. In order to do this I will be placing them onto a memory stick and emailing myself any links I will need, this saves me backtracking any websites that have come in handy when downloading fonts – this will save time in my future production. As of the 14th I will start my production. Researched colours will be placed through an In-design master template. The master template will have 16 pages ready to edit which include;

  • A black background
  • Editable columns
  • Numbered footers
  • An ‘In-house’ feel – It is of the same relative design
  • Outlined double page spreads
  • Outlined advertisement space
  • Any additional work that has already been produced such as final mockups.
  • Every measurement correctly written down
  • Margins produced
With this master plate I am able to jump straight into visual production. This is great because I have struggled to hit deadlines in the past due to not achieving visuals to a professional standard therefore causing me to go over time. If I have the base work done I am more likely to become extremely motivated over the production therefore causing me to complete more work at home and out of set college hours.

Project Monitoring & Photo-shoot Planning: On Wednesday the 15th I mustn’t forget to collect a camera for the booked photo-shoot to come, this gives me enough time to play around with the camera allow me to familiarize myself with the settings. Thursday the 16th will be the correct date to start blogging my initial production. It gives me enough time in the days before to start my In-design work and to reflect on what needs to be done in week two. This is very relevant as I have photo-shoots booked from the 17th onwards therefore my mind will be distracted from the initial production. The blog allows me to carry on from where I left off, as I will write up any starter improvements each week that I had thought of in the one previously. I will also talk about what I have found difficult. I will need to plan what type of photos I will need, from live playing of the band to individual photographs. The article is based around the lead singer therefore most pictures will be of himself.

Photo-shoot: The 18th will be my photo-shoot date. I have trains booked from Darlington to York where it will be held. Organising has already taken place and the shoot will be set in a music venue just outside the town center. I have confirmation from both the band and the venue that I am in fact allowed to shoot on site. I have booked my trains so I can get there in good time, this is very important as the band wont have any other set gigs until the 20th of February which will be far too later by then.

Homework 1: Finish off any Article plans I have left to do.

Homework 2: Start to write up article drafts.

Homework 3: Re-draft some of my treatment.

Exams/other subject deadlines: Business exam 14th of Jan 9:00am.
Performing arts performance 15th of Jan 9:00am.

20th Jan
DPS 1: This week will be based around ‘The Subliminal Band’ article. This is because I have just finished the photo-shoot based on this article. I have done my research and only require an interview which is set for the 21st. By presenting the article at the start of the week by the end I should be confident enough to not only finish this DPS but also start my second one on the next week. Photographs from my weekend shoot will need to be edited in order to start production on this DPS, I CAN NOT spend too much time doing this as I could be in jeopardy to losing future production time. I will back-up any files on my memory stick and email them to myself so they’re not lost.

I Will Need:
  • Article Planning
  • Flatplans
  • An article draft
  • Schedule
  • Treatment
  • Photographs
  • Fonts
  • Colours
  • Contingency Plans
  • Schedule
  • Interview Answers and Questions

Feedback: Toward the end of production of this week I will turn to my peers and any friends that can help me improve the article and its features. I want to have enough to talk about in my project monitoring and start a list of things that need to be done. The idea of this list allows me to come back to anything I have missed towards the end of production, I will think of it as a ‘finishing off’ list. I also want to gain some feedback for my ‘Taste of Tyneside’ article, I really like the idea however it will be determined and adapted more so around my audience, I will take it to my peers in order to gain interest.

Project Monitoring & Thinking of the Coming Week: I need my mind ready to start my second DPS and everything that goes with it. I will again monitor the work I have done and the work to fore come in the weeks ahead, this will help keep my mind active in production. I will talk about what I’ve found difficult this week.

Homework 1: Finish off article drafts; this NEEDS to be done in order to do DPS production.

Homework 2: Extra article research for ‘A Taste of Tyneside’.

Homework 3: Write up additional information and even drafts to my ‘Regulars’.

Exams/other subject deadlines: Performing Arts Essay drafted from up and coming deadline.

DPS 2 & Second Photo-shoot:  The third week of production will be creating my second DPS ‘A Taste of Tyneside’. This will be finished much quicker than my other two DPS’s as half of it follows a recipe. The hardest part for this DPS is contingency planning. I will need confirmation from the author of the recipe and any photo’s it may contain. Problems will occur if I cant obtain legislation for the pieces, if so I will have to create my own recipe based on others and actually create the meal in order to photograph it. This however won’t take too long as it isn’t a hard task yet it will be time consuming both will be down to organization on the previous weekend.

I Will Need:
  • Article Planning
  • Flatplans
  • An article draft
  • Schedule
  • Treatment
  • Photographs
  • Fonts
  • Colours
  • Recipe
  • Contingency Plan

Feedback: Toward the end of production of this week I will turn to my peers and any friends that can help me improve the article and its features. I want to have enough to talk about in my project monitoring and to add to my ‘Finishing Off list’.

Project Monitoring: Along with monitoring my project I want to have everything required on my blog. Posts such as previous photo-shoot plans, flatplans, article plans and drafts. From this I can gain additional research and a positive outlook on the weeks to come. I will talk about what I’ve found difficult.

Photo-shoot: This shoot will be taken on the 30th of January. I will need to have it booked in time and organized properly with my model; this includes giving him a call sheet so he knows what approach I will be taking as well as the lighting technician. This also partially ensures they will be there on time and ready for action. Problems can occur when booking the studio and camera, it will work as first come first serve therefore I will need to be quick. I will also have to push for the model and technician to be there, if they don’t show I will be well behind with my schedule and in jeopardy of losing vital photos.

Homework 1: Keep on top of my blog.

Homework 2: Make sure all article drafts are done and ready for my ‘Regulars’ production.

Homework 3:Make sure DPS 1 is completed to its final form.

Exams/other subject deadlines: Jazz Essay deadline, 2nd of February

3rd   Feb
DPS 3: I will need to edit my photos from the previous shoot ready for the front cover and DPS 3 production.  This DPS will be based heavily around my mock-ups. I will make sure I gain immediate feedback from this DPS and alter anything that may be required to change. This helps me get my product to high more professional standard of work. I will adapt fonts and colours accordingly, this a main task as I do not want it to long out of place from my main template, structure and other previous DPS’s.

I Will Need:
  • Article Planning
  • Flatplans
  • An article draft
  • Schedule
  • Treatment
  • Photographs
  • Fonts
  • Colours
  • Recipe
  • Contingency Plan

Additional Requirements: This week will also give me time to research sell-lines and actually write them up for my front cover. I will do this quickly as I need time to start my front cover production this week. I need to create my masthead and sell-lines in visual form. Problems will occur if I spend too long on my front cover, I am easily distracted with the visual form therefore I spend too much time tweaking the front cover, this assignment is product based so my time MUST be split correctly. I aim to have the base photograph; masthead and additional sell lines finished this week.

Front Cover: My front cover will be my audience’s main focus. It links all the articles together and develops a style in the reader’s head to how he/she thinks of it. I will have to into account it’s a Male and Female magazine therefore produce something both readers enjoy.

Project Monitoring: I will state everything else that should be added into the front cover, I.E. Barcodes, footers and headers, I will also make sure anything else that needs to be moved throughout the product is written down. By this time I’m coming up to the end of the production and I need to be thinking about my ‘Regulars’ let alone the contents and advertisement pages. Again I will be adding to my ‘Finish Off’ list. I will talk about what I have found difficult.

Homework 1: Situate a numbered contents page list making sure everything coincides with my products pages.

Homework 2: Set out the magazine exactly how I want it by switching around any pages that may or may not need it depends on my treatment and project bible.

Homework 3: Try and finish off everything on the front cover according to my project monitoring post.

10th  Feb
Regulars & Advertisement: I will work from my article drafts, as the ‘Regulars’ have been included with this previous production. Most of this wont require much textual work but more visual; blow out boxes, additional pages, DPS adaptation; by this I mean merging them if I have space to fill or need more space for advertisement. As advertisement is my only source of income I will need to make sure I hit the correct amount of space inside this justifies any final movement with the product.

Contents Page: The contents page will have to be produced in a correct style. As it is the link to all my articles it will have a solid design, which infuses all the articles influences. It will be the main page most reader’s start at therefore I needs to be just as intriguing as my articles.

Additional Work: I would like to add in extra article type writing around my advertisement, not as a regular article but things that may intrigue my audience more so.

Project Monitoring: I will be stating what was hard in the production and what major issues occur with coming up to the final week of production. I need to make sure everything that needs doing is written down for the following week. I will prioritize my list of things that I need to do and have any extra work fulfilled ready to follow them up.

Homework 1/2/3: I will use this spare time to get on top of anything that needs finishing off, this will be especially relevant to the contents page, advertisement and front cover.

Half term

17th Feb

Homework: Complete Monitoring and make sure that blog elements are complete. Use extra time for producing my project.

FINISH OFF EVERYTHING THAT NEEDS DOING: I need all my work done this week. I am hoping to be on schedule therefore giving me extra time to make a professional tweak to most of my magazine. I will not however just stop if it is finished. I want to use as much time possible for finishing touches.

Project Monitoring: I will finish off by going over everything I have enjoyed, what I have found difficult and what was the most successful when creating the project.
